A few meeting notes.

Student Learning Council met with Student Resource Council on September 17 and September 24, 2025

In both meetings we discussed the student equity plan, which Patricia sent out last week.  It will go before the Senate in a couple weeks.  There’s nothing in it that’s particular to the PFA, but if you have comments or questions on it, please let me or Patricia know before October 14.

As of now, SLC is just preparing to review some board policies, but nothing that particularly hits PFA.  If there is something of interest to you that you want addressed, please let me now and I’ll take it to the council.

Academic Quality Committee,  September 24, 2025

We met briefly yesterday, and are trying to revamp the Faculty Learning Seminars that are held the first and third Wednesday of every month.  On October 1 the subject is SPOL, and October 15 will be a grading for equity presentation that I’m presenting.

We are trying to get more people involved in the Faculty Learning Seminars, and Erin will be sending out a survey asking all faculty, full time and part time, about preferences and ideas.

Academic Senate September 23, 2025

A few items of interest for PFA.

Fred Patrick noted that there are a number of committees that need members.  I’ve asked him to email me the names, and when I get them I’ll circulate them.  If they need a PFA representative we need to push to get our voices heard on them.  Fred noted that some of the committees meet sporadically, so it may not be a huge time commitment.

It appears that things have changed with faculty teaching out at the prison in Lompoc.  From what Deb Pirman said, part time faculty are being compensated for the time it takes to enter/exit the facility, as well as travel time.  The full time faculty noted they don’t get the same benefits, and they are going to push for that.  We need to make sure that part-timers can keep teaching out there if they desire, and that they are compensated justly.  I spoke with Genevive about it yesterday, briefly in passing, and she agreed FWIW.

Finally, the College has worked out an MOU with the high schools concerning concurrent enrollment.  It really works against AHC faculty, both full and part time, and there’s a lot of concern regarding the rigor with how these teachers are conducting the class in the bell schedule at the high schools.  The MOU primarily addresses FA, and it’s something we need to get involved in, because these teachers conceivably are teaching classes that we could teach on campus, and therefore we as PFA could be in the running to teach.  I expressed this concern to Bob Curry yesterday after Student Learning Council in passing, and he said he’d get back to me.  Monique has some thoughts on this too, and I’m sure she’ll comment at today’s meeting on anything missing here.
